Ahmedabad 30 September 2021: Every year, Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on October 2nd across the nation to remember Mahatma Gandhi. The citizens of India pay tribute to Gandhiji as he played a key role in the Indian independence movement. His quotes and words have inspired people worldwide. Gujarat is the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, he lived in Sabarmati Ashram. The government has established the ashram as a national monument in recognition of the influence that Dandi March had on the Indian independence movement. The Sabarmati Ashram was home to Gandhi from 1917 until 1930 and served as one of the main centres of the Indian freedom struggle.

To pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi, FICCI FLO Ahmedabad chapter’s Textile Initiative team organised ‘ChaloCharkhoShikiye’ activity at the Gandhi Ashram in the early morning of 30th September.

Around 26 ladies of the chapter gather at the mini Dandi bridge located near the Ashram, where they sang prabhatiyas and bhajans. While singing they walked to the HridayKutir situated in the Gandhi Ashram where the ladies learned spinning charkha. The Spinning Wheel or Charkha became not only a symbol of the revolution, but it now is a symbol synonymous with the power of self-reliance, perseverance, and determination.

“Prabhatiyas reverberated in the air as we marched from Dandi bridge towards Gandhi Ashram retracing the steps 75 years later. Trying our hands-on charkha was the best tribute to commemorate and celebrate the birthday of the father of our nation”, said Shilpa Bhagat Patel, Textile Initiative Head, FICCI FLO Ahmedabad chapter.

“This year marked the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence. Mahatma Gandhi, who initiated the Swadeshi movement by taking up the charkha and encouraged Indians to spin their cloth, spearheaded India’s freedom battle. We at FLO Ahmedabad chapter pay homage to Bapu through ‘ChaloCharkhoShikhiye’ activity’” said Nandita Munshaw, Chairperson FICCI FLO Ahmedabad Chapter.
